History of Taekwondo

Taekwon-do is a young martial art that was given its name only in 1955. Taekwon-Do is derived from a number of other martial arts, the most important Taekyon and karate.
During the Second World War Japan was ruling Korea, the soldiers were then taught martial arts. A General of the Korean army, Choi Hong Hi, has learned karate from the Japanese.

After the liberation, he made adjustments and taught the resulting martial arts to his soldiers, that is what now is known as taekwon-do.Choi Hong Hi ensured that taekwon-do is practiced worldwide.
He founded the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) in the 60s.

In 1965, taekwon-do was introduced in the Netherlands by the Korean master Kwon Moo-Gun. He began teaching in Venlo, which then expanded very quickly. Also at this time in West-Nederland another Korean master Master Park Jong Soo started teaching and they started working together. In 1966, the Dutch Taekwon-do Association (NTA) was
established to which we Suokjang was connected. Since 2010 we are affiliated with the ITF Royal Dutch which hold the INO status  whitin the ITF world organisation with the chairman Choi Jung Hwa, son of General Choi Hong Hi.
